Summary

A periodontally involved left maxillary second molar that was supporting a three-unit fixed bridge was treated by vital resection of the mesiobuccal root. The tooth remained asymptomatic for 8 1/2 years. At that time, the distobuccal root became periodontally involved and was also treated by vital resection. Histologic evaluation of the distobuccal root showed normal pulp tissue. Two years after the second resection, the tooth is functional and asymptomatic. Both clinical and radiographic examinations indicate a viable pulp.
