Role of bone imaging in the diagnosis of active root canal infection: case report
A new diagnostic tool, a radioactive jaw image, was helpful in determining the presence of an infection. A patient had severe, poorly localized pain in the left side of the mandible, although radiographs were normal for more than a month. A radionuclide image of the jaw showed focal activity at the site of pain. The pain was relieved by the second of two root canal procedures at the site indicated by the scan of the jaw. The scan of the jaw was valuable in verifying the presence of active pathologic conditions.
